Compared with multi cylinder engine, single cylinder engine is usually simpler and more compact. Most single cylinder engines used in motor vehicles are gasoline (using a four stroke cycle), but diesel single cylinder engines are also used for Stationary Applications (e.g., Lombardini 3ld and 15ld). Air cooling is generally more efficient for single cylinder engines than for multi cylinder engines due to the greater potential for airflow on each side of the cylinder.
